Wilfried Kirschl
(Wörgl 27 April 1930 – Innsbruck 28 January 2010)

 

Painter, art historian and essayist. From 1948 to 1952 he attended the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Vienna, where he trained with professors J. Dobrowsky and H. Boeckl, after which he travelled extensively abroad. Since 1951 he is a member of the Tiroler Künstlerschaft and of the Vereinigung Bildender Künstler, Wiener Secession, in Vienna. Between 1953 and 1957 he taught art at the Gimnasium Paulinum of Schwaz, Innsbruck. Between 1966 and 1994 he was a member of the Kulturbeirats der Tiroler Landesregierung. He has held one-man exhibitions in various European cities.

Paying homage to the tomb of Christian Hess

Innsbruck, 26 November 1974 – On the thirtieth anniversary of the death of Louis Christian Hess, Wilfried Kirschl, a member of the Union of Austrian Artists (on the left) and Paul Flora (at the centre), seen here with the Director of the Italian Institute of Culture, Aldo Lucciarini, pay homage to the tomb of the artist – in the Innsbruck Westfriedhof Cemetary – aged 48 during an air raid over Innsbruck. Exactly thirty years after his death a large itinerant exhibition of Rediscovery of the work of this Tyrolean artist was inaugurated in Sicily, where he had lived in exile, sponsored by the European Parliament, the Region of Sicily and the Goethe Institut, later touching other locations in Italy, Austria and West Germany.

He is the author of a number of monographic works (G. Diesner, 1979; Carl Moser, 1989) and is an expert on the work of A. Egger-Lienz, on which he has published 2 volumes (1996).

He has designed and organised a number of important exhibitions: 2002 Junge Kunst 1952, Kunstpavillon, Innsbruck; 1998 Collezione Tirolo: 1999 Positionen Zeitgenössischer Kunst, Complesso monumentale di San Michele a Ripa, Rome – Austrian Culture Forum in Rome; 1992 13 Künstler aus Tirol, Bonner Künstlerforum, Bonn - Galerie Prisma, Bolzano - Kunstpavillon, Innsbruck - Landeskulturzentrum Ursulinenhof, Linz - Städtische Galerie Lienz.
