A warm welcome to
visitors to this gallery showing the work of the
painter and sculptor Louis Christian Hess
|
|
a multi-talented
artist deeply grounded in European culture who
found inspiration in Expressionism, Cubism and
|
|
the Novecento
Italiano. The vast majority of his works which
we now know are those he handed over to his
sister |
|
Emma for
safe-keeping when he left Sicily for the last
time and which she took steps to protect from
allied bombing. |
|
But little or
nothing is known of the many works dispersed
throughout Europe (especially in Germany,
Austria |
|
and Switzerland) which, following the
dissolution of the Juryfreie Movement, Hess left
unsigned
in an effort to stay |
|
out of the
clutches of the Nazis. Therefore help is welcome
- from art historians, academics, art critics,
collectors, |
|
gallery owners and all those who love art from
the 1920‘s and 30‘s - in efforts to trace works
by Christian Hess |
|
which are either
uncatalogued or missing. It is to be hoped that
by studying the works displayed in this Gallery |
|
vistors may glean
information useful in the search for other works
– both signed and unsigned – by the artist
|
|
and that the
catalogue may thereby be enrichened further. All
those who would like to become art detectives
may |
|
visit the
„Intermezzo“ section to join in the „Hunt for
Missing Works“. You may be able to help establish
the |
whereabouts of the
original paintings and drawings of which we now
possess only photographs. |
